The overlapping nature of many major infrastructure systems in our modern world, such as transport, electricity and communication, means that any disturbace in one system can affect another. Dr Lauren Gardner is looking at modelling these network interdependencies so that future problems can be more easily predicted and addressed.
Dr David Rey is a researcher at the Research Centre for Integrated Transport Innovation (rCITI) at UNSW Australia where he is involved in a range of applied transportation projects. Currently he is working to develop a travel time prediction model for the city of Sydney and on the design of incentive-based mechanisms to promote equitable and sustainable transport systems.
Dr Zhitao Xiong is studying advanced techniques that can lead to an intelligent transport system. His current research is focusing on travel time prediction models that help us understand traffic dynamics and work zone scheduling that can optimise construction project on road networks.
Dr Upali Vandebona is looking at ways transport systems can be easily and cost-effectively improved through the optimal use of signage and directional information. By studying specific user groups and their behaviour in various situations, he plans to produce a framework that will guide the design and distribution of signage in future transport networks. The end result, a better user experience and a more efficient transport system overall.
Dr Taha Hossein Rashidi is a lecturer in Transport Engineering in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW. His research interests include travel behaviour analysis, transportation planning, and modelling to do with activity-based travel demand, integrated land-use and transportation, and goods movement.
Dr Hanna Grzybowska is inspired every day by the way science improves our lives in smart ways. At rCITI she is dedicating herself to developing and deploying integrated network techniques to enhance the NSW transport system and evaluating the algorithms used in ramp metering strategies. She is also looking at the scheduling problems of Field Service Engineers in a whole new way using mathematical modelling.
In her quest to contribute to a more efficient future for Sydney, Dr Emily Moylan is exploring how travel time changes from day to day, from driver to driver and in unusual circumstances, and she hopes to provide insights that will allow policy makers to make smarter investments in transportation infrastructure.
Dr Lavy Libman is studying the emerging Direct Short-Range Communication (DSRC) technology between vehicles and/or roadside infrastructure, and how it's used for real-time traffic monitoring, density estimation and incident detection. His aim is to develop efficient communication protocols which traffic authorities can use in long-term planning decisions.
Transport researcher Dr Ken Doust from the Research Centre for Integrated Transport Infrastructure is looking at the pros and cons of sustainable trunk transport networks. He ultimately aims to provide city planners with additional tools for making informed sustainability decisions.
